We finally arrive at Ike's mom's house in Greensburg, Indiana at about 10pm on Friday, September 23rd (my mom's birthday--1st one I've missed in forever which makes me feel bad, but I enjoyed talking with her). Hard to recall that just a few days ago we were still in Yellowstone!! As we drive down Betty's driveway, what do my wondering eyes do appear? She lives in the middle of a giant corn field!!! I have seen nothing but corn for days and here I am in the midst of a huge field! Her driveway is a "corn tunnel"!
I finally get to meet my new mother-in-law, and am so happy to say that she is a very loving, sweet woman who made me feel welcome from the very beginning. We had eight wonderful days together: went to her church,
I picked some fresh soybeans and boiled them in salt water (a treat we call Edamame) and am amazed that all the farmers around here have never heard of preparing them that way.
We shared a little in the cooking and had some great meals! We had to go to this little restaurant in town called "The Track Side" for one of their famous "Boss Hogg" tenderloin sandwiches. It is a breaded pork tenderloin, the biggest sandwich I have ever seen and absolutely delicious!! Makes up for the "White Castle" visit for sure!!
One of the "highlights" of our visit is seeing the famous "Tree in the Courthouse" For some reason a tree has grown out of the top of the courthouse roof, and that is what Greensburg-ites have adopted as their claim to fame!
Ike's uncle Archie drove up one day to take us golfing, which was a real treat. It was over an hour drive for him to come up and play so we really appreciated it. Archie lost an arm in a car accident as a young man, and that man is an absolutely amazing golfer! He could have a cigar in his mouth, tee up and drive as straight as an arrow for a mile!! He is a tournament golfer and was oh so patient with us "hackers" as we played, and spent a fair amount of time helping Ike look for all the balls that he blasts way far to the right and in the weeds & trees!!
While in town we had a stereo system installed in the little Toyota so now we will have tunes!! Our visit ended too soon, and I leave my new mom-in-law with tears in my eyes and a promise to fly back in the spring to finish the flowerbeds!
