Lake Tahoe - Californian-Nevada State Line
Trip Start Jan 19, 2005

Having driven down the Pacific Highway via Santa Cruz and Monterey Bay, we made the longer journey north-east up to the Nevada/California border on our way to Lake Tahoe. We found some good-ish accommodation for 3 nights and looked around. Again, the first day's weather left us a little disappointed, but when the sun came out, Tahoe is magnificent. The lake itself is 22 miles long and 12 miles wide and we spent the afternoon driving around this, stopping regularly for excellent vistas. We also travelled up the new gondola cable to the top of the mountain, which provided even better views. It has proved somewhat frustrating going to all these lovely ski resorts without being able to partake, but I have found my refuge with the cheap alcohol here in the US.
One huge advantage for me, disadvantage for Claire, is that Tahoe sits on top of the Nevada/California border line, so about 20 metres from our door started a long street of casinos
The time went by really quickly in Tahoe, and we set off for Yosemite Park. The only problem was we took the clockwise route, which, as we found out 3 hours and 200 miles later, was the wrong side to go since all west-bound routes through the park were blocked by snow. That really pleased both of us. Luckily, we'd got to see some great country-side and lake views which we wouldn't otherwise have seen, so all in all it was a blessing in disguise.
I'll catch up with you after Yosemite and some of the national parks.
