Flat Stanley and the Caterpillar engineering team left central Illinois to find cooler weather in south, central Brasil, where it is still the winter season. Brasil winters are much warmer than the midwest and rarely get any colder than 50F. Unfortunately, a midwest rain storm in Chicago delayed our flight. We were forced to sit and do our homework in the Peoria airport while waiting for our airplane.

We boarded the plane in Chicago at 9:35pm, so we settled in to our seats and prepared for sleep. Our flight from Chicago to Sao Paulo, Brasil, was 10 hrs and 5 minutes.  When we awoke, it was morning and time for breakfast. It's fun to eat breakfast at 10,000 feet in the air. What a view!

We landed in Sao Paulo, which is home to 22 million people! The city is huge! We are not allowed to drive in Brasil, so we hired a professional driver to drive us from Sao Paulo to Piracicaba (approximately 2.5 hours away).

Our driver stopped in a local rest area, where travelers can eat and shop. We stopped for some fresh coffee and hot bread balls (made with cheese). Brasilian coffee is much darker than American coffee and is only drank from very small cups. We also enjoyed some fresh bread balls (made with cheese) and chunks of chocolate (similar to fudge). Water in Brasil is typically served in glass, when requested and it can be ordered WITH or withOUT bubbles. The rest area contained one of the popular fast food restaurants called "Frango", which means chicken. It's like a McDonald's, but with more bread-type foods.

Along the way, you can see this area of Brasil is very hilly, with people learning to build their homes right up the hillside. Those people with less money, typically build their small houses right on top of a neighbor or family house, so they are all connected together. These homes do not have any doors or glass windows. They are very colorful people and you will see many houses in many different colors.

Our hotel in Piracicaba is along a river, so we walked down to a nearby park area where they have several local resturantas. We ate fresh, grilled fish from the Amazon Rive basin area.  Brasilans eat alot of fish from the rivers within the country and from the ocean. They cook their fish whole and it is often served with the head and tale still connected. They say it is best that way, because then you know the fish is still fresh by "looking it in the eye". They were delicious! Brasilans eat alot of rice, and usually include rice and french fries with every meal. (French fries are not just an American food).
