After a fair amount of trouble, we managed to get tickets to Shanghai. We found our hostel and then bummed around in the city for a while waiting for Dave to show up. The city is completely different than Xi'an. It's like travelling through a time machine forward about 70 years. There are big, modern, buildings. There are skyscrapers. There are white people. People speak English. Written English isn't loaded with grammatical and spelling mistakes. It makes perfect sense-and is even well written. There's a Subway. There are Italian restaurantS, foreign restaurantS, cleaner streets, and the haze is barely noticeable. That train was a time machine.
Dave showed up a couple hours after we did, and we spent the first night walking in the city. We walked along the famous Bund, which actually might be a bit overrated. It's a very nice riverfront walkway, but for it's international celebrityhood, that's really about all it is. I guess I don't know what I was expecting. We called up one of our friends from Xi'an who also happened to be in Shanghai that weekend. It turns out he was at the Bund, which we had just left. We turned around and headed back. We saw him before he saw us, and as we were getting near him, Eric quickly turned right. Dave and I followed him. Dave, from the US, and Steve, from austraila, didn't know each other. We talked dave into randomly going up to Steve and just striking up conversation. Dave was a good sport, and did so. We hid behind a ginormous umbrella and lauged. A Chinese guy got the gist of what we were doing (the guy who owned the food stand and umbrella) and he was just laughing with us!
