Arriving at Kathmandu was a relief after the journey! We had finally arrved in our 5th country. The people immediately struck us as different from India. Western brands, especially clothes, are everywhere, and it is noticeable that women are far more visible - in India, they sometimes seem hidden away. The people seem far more familiar to foreign tourists - more English is spoken and men do not blatantly stare at Sonia (as a Western female) which was often the case in India.

We ate dinner at the Rum Doodle Bar. It has long been a favourite for mountaineering expeditions to celebrate their conquests, with the likes of Sir Edmund Hillary leaving their mark with trek report graffiti footprints displayed on the walls. Some of the messages were very moving as they indicated great team accomplishments that had been made over the years. One can eat here for free for life - the only snag is you have had to climb Everest first! We felt a bit like frauds as we hadn't actually been on the mountains yet, but after 4 weeks in no-alcohol, vegetarian India followed by the previous 24 hours, we felt like we deserved the live music, steak and our first red wine for two months.

Kathmandu is full of cool hangouts, good food and trekking kit heaven. We set off tomorrow for our voluntary work at the school, back to Kathmandu in 3 weeks. Unsure what it will entail as yet, or if we'll have internet access but we'll try and keep you posted!
