After a delicious Cantonese meal with Kimmy and Joe in Guangzhou, we headed onto Guilin, often called the Jewel of China due to the picturesque Li River with surrounding green peaks and caverns depicted in many traditional Chinese paintings. Few Westerners visit this part of China as we discovered at a 'hotpot' restaurant - we became the star attraction for the friendly staff and customers (nothing like making a mess with chopsticks for an audience!)
We took a 4hr local boat trip down the river to Yangshou amidst scenery said to be unparalleled anywhere else in China. The town itself is very small with 3 main streets of bars, restaurants and local handicraft shops. 1st October is National Day, the start of "Golden Week" in China celebrating the birth of the Republic, as such many Chinese tourists are heading to Yangshou.
It is the perfect place to chill out; we cycled through rice fields with a home cooked lunch by our guide - luckily no snakes, terrapins or rabbit heads (no joke, these have been on the menu!) A bamboo raft down the river was so peaceful with the only exception being the shouts from the beer sellers along the way. Overall, night-time cormorant fishing was our highlight - the fishermen using birds to dive for fish.
Next we head to Macua, fast becoming known as China's answer to Las Vegas. Plan is for Chas to win us a couple of million - hope he's feeling lucky on the black jack!
