Irkutsk is a far way from Moscow, both in distance (5,185km) but more notably in the hospitality. Our faith in the Russian people has been restored after 80hours in a 5ft x 7ft cabin with 2 locals who spoke no English; our meagre Russian of Spasiba thank you, got us through a multitude of situations; sharing food, playing cards and asking our cabin-mate to stop snoring!
The journey was never tedious as we met great people along the way; our Dutch friends Angelique and Barbara, and Eric, the well-travelled music lover from Stuttgart. We snacked on delicious food bought from locals along the platforms and our daily meal in the dining car was the culinary 'highlight'; the extensive menu only seemed to have one dish remaining and the service was reminiscent of Fawlty Towers!
Lake Baikal really showed the Siberian autumn colours at their best. Any chill left us after a traditional Banya (Russian sauna where you hit one another with birch-branches?!) and a feast on local fish from the world's deepest freshwater lake.
Tonight we leave Russia and head off on the train for Mongolia - the border crossing can apparantly take 11 hours so we have packed a few good books!

Good grief!
In all the year's I've known you Chas, I've never seen you with facial hair - I actually thought it beyond your capabilities but I must doff my cap at such a fine spread. Glad to hear the travels are going well - I too am off to do a bit - off to San Fran in a couple of weeks and in Thailand in November. I must study your map closely to see if you'll be around then.
Love to Son and stay well peeps,
Eddie
Weird...
Its kind of strange that after all these years of being forcefully subjected to Bingham photos I am strangely drawn to take a look at all your photos on-line on my own accord!
Its great to to be able to keep up to date as you go and now that I seem to be able to have gotten access via my work pc to this site, i will be able to keep check on the ginger facial situation!
For one that does not travel unless going to work or the pub, I'm getting curiously jealous of your experiences. I look forward to hearing more from you both...Stupot
Hello Bootie
Gizzard!!
glad you're both having a great time, looks like you've managed to survive your train trip cramped inside what sounds an extremely small cabin. (looks like your razor didn't survive - we going eu natural bootie??) How was Red Square - did you get your ass down the McDonalds which is meant to be the biggest in the world?)
I had another date the other weekend, unfortunately no go again, so I'm going to become a priest and see if Jesus can satify me :) ha-ha.. Working like a bitch as usual (sorry for using that blasphemous word 'work') and now looking forward to my 2 weeks hols.
Anyway, enjoy the next few weeks and I'll drop you a line in a few weeks after my vacation..
Take care the both of you!
Dan
The diet starts on the train!?!!
Glad to hear all is well and that your journey is going well. Nice to see you eating all the pies chas (comment from nasty!!!!) Saturday night here and nick, beef, amy and rachael are sitting having a glass of wine before the onslaught of more beers and chilli. Missing you lots and look forward to hearing more about your trip. The photos are great to see and very impressive. Look after yourselves and don't over spend that budget. PS Chas great to see after 5 years at wetherspoons you now do not have to shave every day!!!! All the best from the gang in brum ... spk soon ... Beef, nasty, Rachael and Amy.
