September 8

We set off north to leave the Istrian Peninsula, then stopped first at the town of Labin, a high hill town overlooking the Kvarner Gulf on the east side of Istria. It was unidentified in any of our guide books, but the tourist busses indicated worth a stop, which it was! It was not very big, which may explain the lack of publicity, but it was very nice with small cobbled lanes leading through 15th and 16th C buildings to a spectacular viewpoint overlooking the Gulf and Cres Island. The weather was so so, but stayed dry while we toured the town.

The rest of the day was driving, at first through some very pretty and winding coastal hill road through old resort towns, then around Rijeka (we bypassed it on the motorway… didn't look worth a stop), and then south toward the Dalmation Coast. Our stop this night was at a campsite near the small town of Senj… a tiny, but quiet and comfy campground on a tiny cove below the highway. We had a great thunderstorm this night, with pelting rain… so glad to have the campervan, as we watched the tenters abandon their soggy puddles.
