July 2, 2010

Rode our bikes into Tallinn this morning. The weather was brighter and sunnier than expected. It was about a 20 minute ride, and took us past the cruise ship and ferry terminals. We noticed that there were 3 cruise ships in, and sure enough, the town was swarming with Yankees. We haven't heard so much English spoken since we left home!

We spent the morning touring the upper hill town, which is mostly pedestrian oreiented. There is an Orthodox Church with beautiful spires, Virgin Mary Church which is the oldest church in the Baltics, numerous gardens and towers, and the wonderful Kiek in Koek tower museum. The Kiek in Koek had 5 floors of museum, as well as beautiful peek a boo views of the town… the museum being videos and displays from the 14th C to present, including armaments.

In the afternoon, we stopped at the "Old Haus" tavern in lower town for a beer. It turned out to be our best afternoon beer experience yet. The beer was flavoured, and served with either honey (Pat) or herbs (Bill). And, it was served in litre sized handmade clay flagons by servers dressed very authentically in medieval dress, right down to the shoes. And, to add to all of that, a trio of three women, dressed in medieval garb, played elizabethan madrigals and other tunes on bagpipe, recorder, ancient violin and drums. It turned out to be more expensive than our usual afternoon beer by about threefold (we had some snacks too), but very much worth it!

Needless to say, after a litre of beer each, the ride home was a bit of a blur!
