To break up the long haul to Chachapoyas, I decided to stop in a little town called Celendin. When I arrived, there was a little craft fair going on just outside the Plaza de Armas. As I walked around, it looked like an elephant parade had just been through town, and all the elephants had terrible indigestion. The streets were strewn with piles of large animal "deposits" and the sidewalks were covered with piles of mangy dog "deposits". I try not to judge the acceptable standards of quality of life elements in other cultures, but there is a line where I consider "filthy" to be just "filthy" no matter what.
Other than the filth-factor, Celendin was a fairly quiet & pleasant town to stay the night.
