Blimps floating silently over the desert reportedly can read a license plate from 20 miles.
Helicopters menacingly kick up noise and dust. Military outposts dot Highway 9, surveying vast expanses of desert nothingness day after day. This is evidence of our tax dollars being spent (wasted?). And I'm not mentioning the waste of life-energy of thousands of National Guardmen "employed" in this exercise in symbolic vigilance.

The outposts in the desert look eerily as though they could be in Iraq. Border Patrol vehicles zoom about the desert, apparently unaware of global warming, running on the petroleum provided courtesy of their Iraqi counterparts.

Twenty miles into the U.S., on every highway coming from Mexico, each vehicle must stop for inspection to be sure that every occupant's papers are in order.
Since it's practically impossible for a common Mexican laborer to get that legalization prior to applying for one of the millions of low-paying, labor-intensive positions available here, they have to sneak through this gauntlet of technology. Only the most determined prevail. In the last two weeks, I've heard of six who've perished in this local desert and others who have been apprehended and returned.

Meanwhile, landowners and construction companies don't have the workers they need to bring in their crops or build the jobs they've contracted. The system's broken, and the poor are caught in the works.
