Well, we woke at 2am and couldn't go back to sleep so we read until 8am (when it gets light)
We jumped on the BA website and this just started our day off in a good way – no news on the luggage situation so we contacted the travel insurance people again and we got another small allowance to spend on some more essentials (after 72 hours of the "you know what in you know where" still missing) so we needed to buy a new suitcase (another damn suitcase, as if we don’t already have enough to cart around the many airports – oh, thats right, we currently don’t have any other luggage do we!) and also yet another pair of gortex boots for Bill because you may well remember, the pair I had to convince him to buy in Japan are in the “you know what in you know where”
We had already booked and paid for a 2 day Barcelona hop on and hop off as I mentioned in earlier blog so we thought we had better at least make an attempt to use some of this so we headed out (very cold and dull sky) to hop on the bus (again very cold) and we went to 1 or 2 places but our hearts weren’t in it so we got off. It was eating at me this whole BA situation – day 3 now, what a joke – somebody had to know something out at the airport so I managed to convince Bill to take the train out there and see if we could find out anything else (we had also been ringing them daily via a public phone and they, of course, speak Spanish and not much English so we weren’t sure we were being given the correct information). So Bill, the absolute legend that he is – got us out there, we went up to a service counter (nobody really spoke any English) and of course, they could tell us nothing (big girly girl I am, I started to cry in front of this poor Spanish woman -it was embarrassing, but I now needed to get some medication into me as I am suffering a bit and there is no way you could go to a doctor here, explain that you have a heart condition, you have no prescriptions or any letters from your doctor to verify this as its all in the “you know what in you know where” and then attempt to get a prescription for a drug they may or may not have – it took me 3 goes to ask in a pharmacy for headache tablets - I don’t think so, not in Barcelona you don’t, I would wait until I got to Newcastle and organise once there
So back on the train from the airport to Barcelona humiliated and really feeling down and of course, we got lost twice on the different train systems and everyone we asked didn’t want to look at us, let alone speak to us – hey, thats just the way it is here, its their country and they should be able to treat foreigners any way they feel. By the time we got back to the shops, it was 6pm so we went shopping for the items mentioned above again tackling the sizing problem but we were at least successful with boots for Bill, thermals & ski gloves in preparation for Newcastle. It, of course, to add to our day, it started to bucket down and as we went to grab the umbrellas & ponchos we packed from the luggage, we realised how silly not to remember we had no luggage so on the way to the shops, we ran into the first shop we could see with the possibility of selling an umbrella and bought one ($20aud), took it outside, put it up and saw to our total shock it was a Hanna Montana umbrella with a heart shaped handle and her faced plastered all over the outside – people were staring at us as we waltzed down the road with this stupid umbrella – by then, we didn’t care, at least we could stay a bit dry (no awnings on their shops to hide under).
Took everything back to the apartment and as it was raining very heavily, the new suitcase got wet but we were beyond caring – we went out for Paella and it was great. Off to bed at 11pm (again, they don’t start eating dinner till 9:30 or 10 here which was ok for us because we were shopping till 9pm) and up for a 3:30am start tomorrow (we are being picked up at 4:30am) on the way to the airport headed for Newcastle (hopefully) and so looking forward to seeing all the Gillinders & Quinns again – cant wait and holding onto that as we fall totally exhausted into bed – so ends day 3 in Barcelona.
