Sleepless in Santiago

We made the long haul across the Pacific and it´s fair to say that turning up with some serious jet lag in a city of 6 million non-English speaking people might have been a bit intimidating. Santiago, Chile is surrounded by the Andes on one side and coastal mountain range on the other. Ordinarily this should make for some great views, but the bowl created by the mountains has left Santiago with a heavy layer of smog, which finds it´s way into your throat, eyes and nose. We were surprised by how advanced the city is and how well dressed the people are. It´s a city that would fit better in Europe than South America.
Our sleep patterns were right out while we were in Santiago. Three hours on, three off. We had some wonderful conversations in bed between 2am and 5am and attempted to digest cable TV in Spanish. We really have some work to do to bridge the language barrier. We did manage to get out of the hotel during the day to visit some landmarks like Cerro San Cristobal but every English speaking person told us to be back in our hotel by dark, so sadly we missed the pumping Santiago nightlife.
Off to Quito, Ecuador next and hopefully some more normal hours of sleep. Adios for now amigos!
