We took the ferry over to Montevideo, we reckon soon to be renamed monteDVD.
We met up with a couple of big American guys, on the way over, we had chummed with in BA. Both fireman and larger than life who really enjoyed me slegging them............which was lucky for me as they were both 6 and a half foot no neck types!!!
Once we had ditched the bags, that's rucksacks not wives, we all headed out to explore MV, along with a Canadian girl, Sarah. One thing led to another and the banter went on until the wee hours. Quare geg.
We went to the big market one day.......awesome! It is wall to wall cavemen swigging ale and tucking into massive barbeques.
MV looks like a place stuck in time, and that time is way past............... The shops close half day a couple of days a week and they still use tokens on the buses. It is a pleasant enough place with beaches just outside the centre, so with sunny days it was a no-hassle break.......until......
We got word that our Antarctica has been cancelled:-( the ship needs repairs and won't be ready Doh!!!!!!
The news from the ships owners was just breaking so we had to keep going to internet cafes for updates on the emails. It is so disappointing because we really had built ourselves up:-(
Well we carried on discovering MV, but had this antarctica stuff in the back of our scrambled brains. Went to the stadium where the first world cup was held, built in 1930 in 8 months and has had no work done since! The museum was excellent and the curator very knowledgeable. He asked where we were from and we said well it's not Brazil and says yer man to me............youse must be from Norn Iron!
We went to a football match here between Club Nacional and LIVERPOOL!!!! It was great, some funny looks to me as the man in the red shirt and matching hair. Unfortunately we were bate but it was a fantastic day out and we had some good laughs with the locals, some of them might even remember the words of You'll Never Walk Alone........
All in all MV was a lovely spot where things move s-l-o-w-l-y.
Now it's back to BA and the ongoing Antarctica saga..............
