Colder than we thought. Climbed the steeples of the towering cathedral in town and got vertigo partially due to lack of oxygen (Quito is around 3000m I think) and partially due to the rickety ladders, huge rung spacings and sizeable holes in the brickwork. Lots of police and military hanging around carrying enough kit to start WW3. Evidence of poverty everywhere but the locals we encountered were mostly friendly and helpful which made us feel quite safe and quite guilty at the same time.
