Our whole day today has been geared around our preparations for afternoon tea at 4pm . We had to make sure that our other eating plans for the day fitted with the late afternoon nosh. Initially we planned to have a late brunch and skip lunch completely but laying on a sunbed all morning is hard work so when it got to 1.30 and we couldn't resist the hunger pangs any longer we each had a chip buttie to keep us going.

Afternoon tea was served in the formal dining room on deck 5 and it didn't seem right turning up in t shirt and shorts straight off the sun deck. So although the food was lovely Minnie and I agreed that we would have to get dressed up if we did it again.

We were back up on deck by 5pm to catch the last bit of sun ( we had been sitting in the shade all day as it was blisteringly hot again). Later on, they were showing a movie on the big screen on the sun deck and we decided to stay out to watch it. Needless to say the late sun and cream tea combination soon had me catching some z's.

I had the weirdest of dreams about a finishing school for cakes that wanted to make it to the top tier on the afternoon tea circuit. It featured two pals, an apple slice nicknamed the Cinnamon Kid and a Chocolate Chip Muffin or Chip for short. Chip and the Kid were inseparable, they lived life to the full on the wild side of the tray but they didn't know that they were yesterday's cakes and the odds were stacked against them making the first tier on the cake stand.

Kid was a ladies man and he took a fancy to one of the new fondant creams, all pink and yellow swirls and wearing a crinkly skirt. "Hiya Cup Cake" the kid said but as he moved towards her, one of his crumbs caught in the doily and he flipped off the plate. Chip saw the apple turnover but before he could reach him, Kid was snatched up off the floor and taken away. The next time that Chip sees his pal he is wearing a cherry. Chip realises it's all over for the kid - he's been iced.

Chip is in despair. He'll never make it to the first tier on the cake stand without his pal. In a fit of depression he starts drinking Coke. When it seems that his life couldn't get any lower he is befriended by a salmon and cucumber sandwich. They fall in love and life starts to pick up for Chip but deep down Chip knows there is no future in the relationship. Because, Although she comes from a family of open sandwiches, Salmon and Cucumber is far too upper crust for him and he can't possibly have enough dough to keep her bread from curling.

Life goes on and Chip continues to work hard but the first tier seems as far away as ever. Until one day a customer complains that the fondant creams are far too sickly and asks for a traditional muffin. The waiter apologises to the customer and explains that muffins are yesterday's cakes but offers to speak to the manager to see what he can do. He goes off to see the Maître D who remembers Chip at the back of the tray. He blows off the dust, gives him a new coating of sugar and places Chip at the centre of the first tier on the cake tray.

Finally Chip is Top Bun

I woke up and the movie was still running. Tom Cruise was just just doing the "I feel the need the need for speed" but I couldn't stop thinking about Chip and the Cinnamon Kid.

I think if you find an illustrator you might have the makings of a children's book, or maybe Jenny could use it for her next project?
