After a long flight (it was Sally's first long haul flight) we eventually arrived in Kuala Lumpa both really tired. The heat hit us straight away and when we got to the hotel we were both pleasantly surprised.
First job was a powernap and then we caught the train into a huge shopping centre in the city, passing all the little towns with people living in tin huts. Its quite amazing, Sally had never seen the divide between the rich and the poor like this before.
After some dodgy seafood on the plane we wanted to play it safe and go for some Western food, so when we got charged a pound for a large Maccy D's meal we were ecstatic!!
Spence then went on to do the shopping for both of us, buying a shedload of clothes for 40 pounds!
It was then early to bed, ready for the flight the next day.
This was a lot better flight and seemed so much shorter- however actually getting off the plane was a different story!
They sprayed everyone on the plane to prevent bird flu and so we all had to sit there choking for 10 minutes, and then when we did eventually get off the plane we got searched at Customs as Sally forgot to mention we were bringing toffee into the Country!!

27th October- 13th November

Spencers family came to collect us from the airport, and we ended up staying at his grandmas house (even though she wasn't there).
We spent much of our first week with Spencer's Aunty Angela and Greg who were so kind to run us all over the place and to help us find our camper van.
They took us to lots of places- a posh resort called Sanctury Cove where we went into the lovely pools and Sally discovered she adored Spa's, up to the Springbrook mountains, to Tallebudgera beach with the dogs, to Tropical Fruit World (where we tried fruits which we hadn't even heard of or seen before) and to have our first proper Aussie BBQ. We were so lucky to have them take us round and we saw some great stuff.
While doing all of this, we were seeing lots of birds (which scared Sally), lots of lizards (which scared Sally) and lots of bugs (which scared Sally). This is not to mention the horrible cane toads and all the other things which you find over here!!
Angela also took us round to look for the camper van which we were both itching to buy, and after seeing a few and an inspection from Uncle Peter we decided on a van which actually lived in Surfers Paradise so was just up the road.
We absolutely love our van and we have called it Trouty!!
She is a 1985 Toyota Hiace and she has been very well looked after. She even has a microwave and a shower!!
We have realised that Aussies really like to gamble, so we have been trying to fit in with the locals too.
We have been to Bingo (neither of us won), we tried our hand at the Pokies and Keno, entering all the competitons we can possibly enter and we were also here for the Melbourne Cup. This is huge to the Aussies- its is like our Grand National but bigger. So on this day we went with Pete, Melly and Angela to the Casino to have lunch and to have a little flutter. We did win, Spencer picked the winner, but as it turned out we just about broke even. Still it was a fun day.
Spencer has really been getting into the surf culture out here and he loves going to the beach in the morning for a swim.
He has bought a boogie board and he got his surf board from the last time he was here. He has also bought all of the snorkeling equipment and a fishing rod, so he is really getting into the swing of Aussie life. Sally however is a bit more wary of the sea, especially after seeing lots of blue jelly fish on the beach- thats enough to put anyone off!!
We decided to give the camper a couple of runs out before we got on the road properly so one day we took Angela to Tambourine Mountains which as you can guess is very high up and so a lot cooler there. There were so many sweet little shops that it was a really nice place to walk around.
We also drove to places like Marina Mirage near Surfers. This is really posh and we just enjoyed sitting there watching the world go by with our fish and trips.
While we were staying in Surfers, Spencers Uncle Peter also moved into the hippest new building in town- Q1. Its the tallest residential building in the world.
So we spent quite a lot of time there - lounging by the pool, going in the spas and saunas, it was great.
However we soon decided it was time to get on the road and start our adventure properly, so off we set........
