Heidelberg
Entry 58 of 106 | show all | print this entry |
We got up early, and after a very nice breakfast, went outside to another wet and windy day.
We did not bother doing anz sight seeing in Mannheim, and went straight to the train station. We put our bags in a locker, and got onto the 12 minute train to Heidelberg. Besides being the same name as my home town in South Africa, Heidelberg is luckily also a tourist attraction.
Situated on the Neckar river, Heidelberg is dominated by a huge castle high on the hill behind the main town. The old town is full of charm, with two huge churches, and cobbled stone streets. We made the tough trek to the castle, and enjoyed walking around the massive grounds. While the rainy weather was bad for views, it was great for the atmosphere.
We then walked back town through town making our way back to the station. In a matter of minutes the sky cleared, and suddenly it was a bright sunny day.
We had changed our plans again, and now decided against the Black Forest, and instead make our way up to the city of Mainz, along the river Rhine.
We got a train back to Mannheim, picked up our bags, had some lunch, and then caught the next train to Mainz. We were glad to be arriving in Mainz by 16:30, to give us plenty of time to find accommodation.
However, what we had not factored in was that it was a Friday night, and it was not going to be easy or cheap to find a room for two nights over a weekend. Three exhausting hours later, we eventually settled on the first hotel we had tried, for a very expensive price. We could have possibly stayed at a Youth Hostel, but they were not picking up the phone, and we did not want to make a long trip out to where they were and find they did not have space.
We went out for a quick beer and another Kebab, before heading back to our nice hotel room for an early night.
