From Oradea on into Transylvania, the roads are the best we've seen so far through Europe. Just miles and miles of twists and turns and breathtaking views. My pictures fail to do them justice. I would come back to Romania just to drive around.
We made it into Cluj-Napoca in the late afternoon to try to find the camping spot that Lonely Planet has (the only one for this area)
. Unfortunately, Cluj is not a very well laid out city as we got split up from the Facerace guys, then we went down a bus-only street, narrowly escaped getting pulled over by a cop (for driving in the bus lane), the Facerace guys were driving down a one-way street the wrong way, and it took them about 30min to find us in the central cathedral in town (the only thing you can see from all over the city). Once we all got back together, we told them we were heading to Camping Faget...which made them (being 3 guys in one car) just a little worried about how they might be greeted. Anywho...we did end up finding the campground (don't try to walk from the bus stop like LP says to, you will die of exhaustion) way up at the top of a hill overlooking Cluj and the surrounding countryside, which would have made for a stunning view if the sun weren't almost all the way down. We did manage to get the requisite funny pictures with the sign outside the campground, then were pleasantly surprised to find they have a full bar and restaurant on-site! It was going to be a good night after all! So we parked the cars near where we would set up tents, and we all headed off to the bar...the tents could wait until later.
We all stayed up there until past closing time, drinking and talking and having a great time. And at one point, we realized that there was a trampoline off to the side, and well...you can't just pass that by can you?
We made it through Romanian customs nice and quick and headed into Oradea to do a little sight-seeing. There wasn't anything really exciting we were coming for, just had read that it was a really pretty city, and it was. The architecture was what I was expecting from Romania, very old-world looking. We did stay too long though as we wanted to make sure the cars wouldn't be ransacked by gypsies looking for treasures.
