On Thursday, Jacqui and I went to my friend and coworker Robbie's house here in Tres Lagoas(he's older and has more seniority so he rated getting a house) to have dinner and drinks with his girlfriend who flew in from Finland. We didn't get started til late because I was at work until 20:00 so we didn't start grilling until probably 21:45. I had never met Robbie's girlfriend before so it was nice to see a new face around here. And she's got a cool name...Marijo(pronounced like Mario, from the video game!) Apparently she'd never heard this before...but after I finally got it right, I asked, "So after you meet new guys, do any of them ever say, 'It'sa me...Luigi!!'?" Maybe you've gotta hear it in the higher-pitched Italian accent I was trying for but they all thought it was hilarious. Anyways, the food was excellent and I do have to say I'm jealous of Robbie's house. Although, when it rains really really hard, like it did that night, his back courtyard floods. We stayed there until it stopped raining talking and drinking wine until 2:00am. That did make getting up for work on Friday difficult.
Also, Thursday, there was a birthday party for one of the VCP Maintenance guys who is a friend, even though we can't communicate all that well because my Portuguese is terrible. Didn't get to go to that but he understood. And there was a big dinner being thrown by one of our vendors for all of us that same night...missed out on that too.
Friday...actually we stayed in Friday night...
Saturday(yesterday) I made sure I took a nap when I got home from work at noon...which is good when you hear the rest of it. Jacqui and I found a new place for dinner last night which has one of the better steaks that we've had. Jacqui even said that she thinks the steak we had last night was better than the one from Ruth's Chris Steakhouse in Hong Kong...and this steak only cost R$28(<$14USD) for two people, including rice, fries, palmito(heart of palm). I should have taken a pic but forgot my camera last night. The restaurants name was Poppa Sol & Momma Lua.
Then my friend Titina gave me a call to come out to a birthday party for one of the VCP Operators. There were a fair amount of people that I know from the company and from VCP so it was good to have people to hang out with. The party started off in a little club as a private party with lots of dancing and some drinking. It was fun but could have been better if the strobe lights weren't going so hard. The police only came once because of the noise.
Then about midnite, we all left the little club to go to Viracopas. After waiting in line to go inside, the bouncer told me that no shorts/sandals were allowed. So then I had to walk back to the hotel(not far away) and change, then walk back. Luckily, I got to go through the short line this time. There was a really good band playing at the club this night. Lots of Brazilian music and they knew some good American tunes too. We all had a lot of fun there. At one point, this big, old woman kept trying to booty dance with me and kept pulling me in to take pictures with her. I kept trying to move towards Titina and to bring her into the pics but this woman was having none of it. Finally another friend Rodrigo went to her and told her to stop...that I'm married and she shouldn't be forcing herself on me. She almost looked like she was going to hit him but at least she did stop! We were dancing and singing the morning away until about 04:30. Then a few of us decided to go get a bite to eat at this little rundown hole-in-the-wall place. It was greasy but tasty. Then after dropping Rodrigo at his hotel, we finally got back to the hotel about 05:30...just a few hours ago!
Today at noon, there's a big lunch thing for all the Andritz and VCP personnel. I'll take pics and add an update to this later this afternoon...
So the party was held at a place called Papillon Eventes...which was a huge reception hall on the outskirts of Tres Lagoas. Now why there is the demand for a huge reception hall in Tres Lagoas I don't know. But I think it has something to do with the large cattle auction pens behind the main building. Maybe most of the auctioning goes on inside there?? That's my hypothesis anyways. The food was good and we got to see a bunch of people...but after eating, I just wanted to come home and get some rest...
