It is the main city in Bolivia with a population of around 1.5 million. It has tonnes of markets, including one called a witches market. It is also surrounded by mountains which make for a nice backdrop of the city. We all got some shopping done here, as the markets were relatively cheap. Steve and I each bought a sweater, Mike bought a backpack and Jo bought some pants.
We stayed in a good hostel, called Adventure brew, they have their own microbrewery downstairs. It had a good location near the bus station and still close enough to the downtown.
Our second day here (Friday) we decided to go on a bike tour for the following day. As paraglding wasnt extreme enough for us, we stepped it up a notch. The bike tour we did was called the Worlds Most Dangerous Road. It used to be the main thouroughfare from La Paz to northern Bolivia and it was not uncommon for cars to go off the road. And going off the road generally means falling some 500 meters. Steve took this video while biking (not recommended).
Now the road is used for bikers like us. The start of the day was an hour drive from La Paz, to the highest point of 4700 meters. We got on our bikes with our guide and the first part of the road was asphalt and we reached speeds of 60km/h. After about 2 hours, the real Most Dangerous Road began: a 2.5 meter wide dirt rocky road, with 5-700 meter drops on your left the entire time. We didnt go quite as fast on this part, but got up to around 40km/h. It was definately more extreme and exciting than paragliding.
In a little over 3 hours, we had descended 3600 meters, passing many nice waterfalls, and beautiful views of the mountains. And we all got a t-shirt saying that we survived the Worlds Most Dangerous Road.
We spent three days in La Paz and unfortunately had to move on right away to Copacabana. We are more constrained for time now as we have to be in Cuzco by Friday. More pictures are posted then the ones that appear on here so check them all out
