I was going to call this entry Viva Las Vegas. But since I didn't win I decided to name the entry after Hunter S Thompson's book.
I thought I could control myself in Vegas. I thought my gambling days had passed. That was until I put my "lucky irish" jersey on, and walked into an irish casino. I was going to play a black jack table. Instead I saw a black jack machine on the way in and played that "beforehand" I lost 20 US dollars in 1 minute. It set the theme of the night where I walked into the casinos to see what they looked like, then "had to just have a play while im there". I lost 50 dollars in the first night. Mainly on their slot machines. But I must say. There slot machines are cool. They have the arm. Its all about the arm!
In Australia we get free soft drinks while we play pokies. In America its free whatever you want!! Its insane! I got a beer and then I tipped the girl a dollar and she asked if I wanted another for when she came back. Of course I said. Before I knew it I had a row of 5 beers next to my pokies that cost me 5 bucks in tips. If your smart, you play 1 cent hits. But see, I cant sit there and only play one line on the pokies, I need to do 20 lines. Those 5 beers cost me dearly.
Of my 3 days in Vegas I had a routine. I would sleep in, wake up, watch "That 70's Show and a bit of Scrubs" Then leave the hostel around 11pm when the common room closed. I would then proceed to play slot machines and get free alchohol. I learnt that if you don't tip, they don't come back any time soon.
Whats great about Vegas is that anything goes. Prostitution is illegal. But "Private strip shows in your hotel room" aren't. You cant go out at night without coming home with a dozen cards with pictures of girls called Candy who are only 20 dollars! I actually tried to see if I could collect every girl. But there was hundreds and I looked like a sleeze with 100 naked girl cards in my bag.
The hostel I stayed at seemed hardly worth the price. Since the motel next door was a few dollars more. It was wedged next to a porno store, a weeding chapel and a strip joint. It was down the road from the wedding chapel where bruce willis, Britney spears, and Michael Jordan got married. For me it was hard to meet people in Vegas. I think because I like to gamble alone. I don't like people to see me lose. It makes me hate them! I did meet a couple of good people in the hostel. A girl from Taiwan that is the best female pool player I have ever met. Fate had it that she  flew out the day I discovered her. Its rare to meet a pretty girl that good at pool. If she had stayed one more night I would have married her across the road.
Anyway I hate people watching me lose. So when a Canadian Pshycologist student called Leila asked if she could tag along on my last night I said no. Then I said fine but im only going to play one table and that's it. I had up till this point lost 90 dollars US. A lot of money when its like 30% of your remaining bank account!
I saw many issues with a Psycologist watching me gamble. Im a basket case in normal life. When gambling im off the charts. I punch things, swear, cry. That's why I hadn't gambled for a good couple of years before vegas. Im a bad bad loser. Not as bad as Peter Newsome who once hit a pokie that hard that the door broke open and he had to use a chair to hold the door shut and thus stop the alarm.
Leila proved a good luck charm. I played the Tables  at a cheap casino called Slots for Fun and won back 40 bucks on Blackjack. She was more excited by gambling than I. I taught her how to play slots and the wonderful world of gambling.
Vegas is a crazy place. Its not like I imagined. Its pretty much just buildings on a road and the streets outside are quieter than I thought. It's a crazy place that never sleeps. But, I think if I spent more than a few nights there I would die.
