couple of days in Helsinki just to say ive been there and also to visit
a couple of Finish guys I met in bosnia/crotia/motenegro.
I didnt realise when I arrived in Helsinki that I would be going
forward in time so much. I didnt even realise when I was there that the
time had changed. Totally sent me out of whac. I had to rush to dump my
gear off at the hostel and see the finish guys. Kari and Juha.
As usual i got lost trying to find my way around
bus from the airport. The fact that it was pouring down did not help,
but i cant help the fact that im a dumbass. When i got lost, there was
always a Fin to help me out. Almost all speak perfect English. The fins
are so helpful and so nice, and Kari and Juha are a testament to this.
Probably 2 of the nicest guys you will ever meet, and their english is
so good that other finish people think they are tourists. I ended up
meeting up with Kari and Juha, got some grub, drank a couple of beers.
Played a bit of pool. I had one of those pool days where everything
just works. Maybe it was the Ireland jersey! Or maybe it was the beer.
The beers have wierd names here like Karhu, Koff, and Urho (try going to a bar and asking for "Your Ho"), bizzare. Actually its meant to be said Urrr Whooo. And they
all taste bad
has happened to my pallette.
My first and only full day in Finland I slept in. As was predicted
the night before. I was so out of it after time change (going to sleep
at 4am english time) and also the fact that I had shared a room with Pepe in London.
I walked around and checked out the sights as quick as i could in the
hour of sun that was available. By 3 it was dark. So i headed back to
the hostel. The guys had said I should check out the Finish national
sport of Ice hockey. So i did. Went and saw Jokerit play Kalpa. There
was only 7000 people in a massive place. It was pretty cool to see
although there was no real atmosphere, but it was alright still i
thought. Jokerit had ACDC and Rocky as their support music
the 2 best choices for a team i reckon.
I headed back to my hostel. My hostel was pretty Unique. Built
into the side of the Olympic stadium. Modern with all the perks. Was so
different to being in the hole in England. I missed Pepe... But there
was one wierd middle aged Polish guy to remind me of the good old
days. He was doing shots of some Polish whisky and yelling out random
stuff. I hate having broken English conversations where you have to
repeat the same sentence 10 times. After an hour all you end up
discussing is where your from and that its the place where there is
I quite liked Finland
the rest of Scandinavia is some sort of Utopian society. Where everyone
is smart and all the girls are beautiful (many blondes - see pic), and
everyone dresses well and is nice. Even the pool hall was tame. Missing
the drunken rowdiness of the workers sports bar back home...
I left Finland. Happy to have seen one little bit extra of
the world. I set my Mp3 player to Frank Sinatra, New York New York, and
headed to the airport. My plane was delayed because the plane was
broken. I was refunded for my inconviniance with Fin Air dollars to go
nuts in the airport. It was 6 euros. 6 euros was a bottle of water at
the airport. I considered buying some Finish pornography for Baker as a present, the likes of
which I dont think we will ever see in Australia
No I didnt buy it!! I just walked in and out of the news agent 10
times. I got a sandwich instead.. I promise. Im sorry Bake...
Since they changed the plane. I got a crappy plane with only
a central tv. Was like the 80s or something. Saw a alright movie with
the Napolean Dynamite guy (School for Scoundrels). He looks so
different without red hair! He looks like Baker!
