We arrived at 3:30 in the morning. Walked around the corner and up the road. Ciaren pointed out that must be the Australian embassy with the plaque of Oz. We walked further realising after 10 minutes that that was actually our hostel. Yes it had an Australian plaque. It was actually run by Australians as were a few of the hostels in the area. Friendly Fun Franks it was called. Try asking for that at 3:30 in the morning, people think your looking for a gay brothel.
We found the hostel and first thing given to us when we walked in was the complimentary free beer. Great!! Free beer! I love beer!!!....
Sadly, we only spent 2 nights in Latvia. There is much more to see that interests me in the rest of Europe. Latvia seemed very similar to Estonia, so it was just a quick stop off. More old town! Bit more of a party vibe.
Apart from walking around the usual sights and taking photos. I did go to an interesting place called the Museum of Occupation of Lativia. It basically went into the details of how Russia deported all its people to Siberia and destroyed all the churches or turned them into museums of Atheism. Then when they thought the Germans had come to rescue them they were wiped out. Then once the war was over the Russians came back. Not a happy history for Latvia, Estonia or Lithuania.
Latvia is like Estonia, a cool place to hang out. It looks a bit newer to Estonia since i think it got bombed more in WW2. Everything seems to be getting renovated. I would definatley recommend staying longer... but the grail calls.
