Total miles for today is 254.

I really wanted to see the lava field in El Malpais so that is where I headed first this morning.  It was worth the drive.  I went to the Sandstone Bluffs overlook and it was very pretty.

I looked around the puddles to see if any critters had been around.  No tracks.  I guess they were all washed away by the previous afternoons thunderstorms.

Then I went back to a big visitor center for the area.  On the information board was a notice to be very careful because a mountain lion had been sighted the day before at the Sandstone Bluffs overlook.  Glad I didn't know that when I was there.

Heading west I crossed the Continental Divide.
Not far from there I drove through the Red Rock State Park.  Very Pretty.

I think every Indian Reservation has a casino.  And there a lot of reservations.  I resisted temptation as long as I could and finally stopped at the Fire Rock Navajo Casino.  When I signed up for the players club I got a free t-shirt.  Yeah, I know.  What did that t-shirt really cost me?  How much did I lose?  It cost me nothing.  I didn't lose.  I walked out the door with my FREE t-shirt and $11. of their money.  Fun.

Since I was in the vicinity, I drove historic Route 66 through Gallup, N.M..  Nice old buildings and a nicely restored art deco movie theater.

When I drove in to Arizona I gained another hour.  Yes, they are in the same time zone as New Mexico.  But Arizona doesn't go on daylight savings time.

Then on to the Petrified Forest National Park.  Saved another $10. with my Golden Age Pass.  But once again the thunderstorms started forming and my pictures for the painted desert are not that good.  But that's what post cards are for.  I did manage to get some pictures of petrified wood.

See my little buddy here.  Either he (she) was following me or there were an awful lot of ravens in the park.  They seemed to be everywhere.   And I did see a prairie dog run across the road.

But the strangest sight I saw was on the interstate.  When I first saw it it gave me quite a jolt.  I thought someone had driven onto the interstate the wrong way.

Then it was time to find a place for the night.  Till tomorrow.
