I only got a couple of days in Lahore but from what I can tell, Lahore is definitely "where its at" in Pakistan. I was told - if you haven't seen Lahore, you haven't seen Pakistan. Well, I saw Pakistan!
The markets are the most fun - Lahore is famous for shoe-shops. They have mountains of sandals (chupples?) in many styles, colors, shapes - at very reasonable prices. Plus, they are very well made. I only wish I had more time (and taste) to choose a bunch of different styles. I one got two pair :(
Well, I am departing for India tomorrow. I recognize that in re-reading the last few entires about Pakistan I haven't really discussed the "darker" sides of Pakistan. I asked myself why I didn't have more to say about those points. Then I realized, because this exists in my own backyard as well! Pakistan has a lot of work ahead of her - but for a nation that only recently (in historical terms) got her independence - it seems there are positive prospects. Given that this is MY travelogue I reserve the right to say this .... the one thing Pakistan does need is democracy. Without this, I feel Pakistan will move slowly forward (if not a bit backward) rather then at the pace and in the direction many of its people want it to go.
