Morning all! Got a day off school today so had some time to do internet and potter about some of the churches and other tourist stuff in Antigua, which I still have not done after 3 weeks. Got the day off school today because yesterday we had big Christmas Party and combined Birthday celebration for Dom the guy that set up all the schools. Party or Fiesta was fun, all the volunteers went up in the morning to decorate the school with paper chains, balloons, streamers, pom poms and banners the kids had made in art classes last Thursday. Yes, thats right I Miss uncreative, nearly made my art teacher cry, did a whole day of art with 50children and a lot of glitter and ribbon on Thursday. Photos of Classes Treize's er...'creation' to follow. Once the school was sufficiently transformed we had lunch, lots of shots of some weird red gloppy local spirit and cake for Dom afterwards. Incidentally this is about the 3rd cake I have enjoyed in celebration of Dom's birthday. Last Friday night, his actual birthday all volunteers went to his for curry night and birthday cake eating. The first cake was actually a balloon filled with water and convered with cream, the second cake was delicious.
Back to yesterday, about 300people were crammed into the school, both morning and afternoon classes AND parents/other siblings. Complete mayhem. The girl volunteers were all dressed up in the local dress-wrap skirt and top. Not my preferred dress but the kids loved seeing us all dressed up! The kids did some dancing and singing, then 300 people were fed, an army of local women had been cooking all day and all the kids got presents o and the volunteers did some dancing too, yep strutted the moves in the school. The whole day was crazy and exhausting but the kids were really fun. My favourite bit was being mobbed by my 50children whilst giving them all presents, every single one of them hugged and kissed me. Even the cheeky monkeys were cute yesterday!
Will put photos up in a minute. Other news, moved house at the weekend! No more casa crazy Christina with the poinsettias and tape covering the plugs, have moved about 10doors up the road and now live with very sweet, slightly older couple, whose 2 daughters and grandchildren live next door so are always around which is nice. The couple are very sweet, have no clue how to spell their names but they invited me for Christmas Eve celebration which is a big deal here straight away which was great. They are so kind, last night they went out and instructed me about 5times to invite the other girls over and watch TV! Cute. Also at the weekend we had a party for Nathan, photographer guy who was heading home. Rule of the party, spend max 30Q- 2pounds at the market for your total outfit. Some manic haggling and exchanging on Saturday avo produced some hideous combinations. Photos of this may go up..... not sure, they do not make us look cool!
