Highlight: Ducking and weaving by bike through the crowds on the banks of the Thames.
Jet lag kicked in - almost missed breakfast! awoke at 10:00 a.m.!
Sunny London - perfect for touring about - felt like summer! I'd googled art on Canary Wharf prior to leaving home and found a delightful exhibit at Canada Square - a 10 minute walk from our hotel. Beautiful sculptural ceramics - check out the pics
Continued on to the ferry at dock at Canary Wharf, floating down the Thames to where we'd seen Barcus Bikes. After much help from a friendly Brit - we managed the unfriendly system and released 2 and off we went! Hello Big Ben - you look different from a bike!, even found bike lanes over the Westminster Bridge then ducked and wove our way through the crowds along Southbank. Cathedral bells ringing like crazy, Mary Poppins I was, except the bike had a metal basket instead of wicker and 3 speeds, not our 20 :) didn't matter, land was mostly flat except coming up stairs after lunch. Yet another friendly Brit - female! grabbed the front of my bike and help me haul it up! the bikes were heavy!
Lunch stop at Hayes Quay at a wee French restaurant for salad, humus and a glass of white vino - omg - they serve such large glasses! Now I was singing to the bells as I peddled along! and verbally grateful to all who jumped out of the way of the singing Canadian - picture lunatic weaving her way along with Rich catching the rude comments as he traveled behind.
Back over Blackfriers Bridge, a stop at St. Paul's Cathedral for a prayer however the HEAVY music deterred - was actually scary! - felt much more "in tune" while riding and singing along the beautiful sidewalks beside the Thames.
Tube back and now relaxing in the hotel lounge coincidentally in time for it's happy hour - the generousity in this lounge is wonderful - complimentary appies and free drinks!
BIGGEST surprise - on our bed upon our return - a TEDDY in Hilton Canary Wharf garb for Zachary James!!!. We had chatted to the darling gal at Concierge desk about where to find the Barclay bikes , where to catch ferry etc. somehow mentioning Zac in the conversation so what do we find but the sweetest teddy bear with a letter hoping that we'd had a great day on our bikes, hoped that Zachary James would enjoy the teddy and asking if they could do any more for us. Too wonderful!! And this hotel was less expensive than any we've had in London before!
Out for dinner at an amazing Turkish restaurant on the water, content after a perfect day exploring London by Bicycle for the first time.
