Day one in Malta: Into Valetta to begin the search for information on R's grandmother's and aunt's time here on Malta. Following Concierge's instructions, up one hill, down the other - street under repair.. found a Toy museum! [Chuckles - yes, many photo's and Santa will bring a surprise matchbox size]. The lady in the toy museum called her mother down the street who gave us another location to check - off to police station - yup, up hill and down through narrow cobbled stoned streets -found location and....closed for the day - heh. Did you know tho' that this little island had HUGE influence through all the turmoil in the Mediterranean through the ages long ago - right back to Apostle Paul in 60 A.D.?? have learned so much!! Local cuisine in St. Julian's at end of exploring Valetta day -amazing.
AND THEN - I'd read the local newspaper front to back on the way here (storm in Rome kept us on the runway for 2 hours) and saw a tiny advert about a free concert in St. John's Cathedral - massive cathedral in centre of Valetta. So we scooooted in on one of the diesel spewing orange busses!! an hour before it was scheduled and sure enuf there was a line up - we made it in!! A charity concert - all the local aristocracy were there (invitations folk in first) such a site......and then the choir began.... and the soloists....and ohhhhhh what an enormously moving experience. Debs and Tom - a Requiem Mass - Haydn first, Pie Jesu by 2 different composers, the second being Andrew Lloyd Webber!! almost tears you guys, almost!!! The program had English translation which enriched the experience even more.....Dinner in a 400 year old wine cellar...hilariously grumpy waiter....amazing penne for R and a die for pizza for B....home in quite the risky taxi - busses finished for the eve... but we made it - so FULL....in so many ways.... in bed pooped!!!
