Today was a long bus ride deep into Turkey on our way to Kappadokia.  We made several stops along the way.  Yesterday we were at the museum that displayed artifacts about the Hettitite people and today we saw where they actually lived.  They were a powerful empire of the Ancient Near East that ruled from about 1600 to 1200 BC.  They were located high on a rocky summit, (Hattusas) which offers a wealth of archaeological treasures that have been recovered, including records offering extensive details concerning political and religious aspects of the culture.  We visited a local village built on the ruins of the ancient Hittite capital and saw some reconstruction of the old walls.  Then we visited a sacred Hitttite sanctuary of two chambers enclosed by natural rock formations.  Hewn out of the rock are depictions of deities and a stone relief of the King.
