Not just another gringa...

Family Torbet's day :)
When I first arrived in Peru, I was convinced that I either had:
a) Brocolli stuck in my teeth, (chance would be a fine thing, my body is severely lacking in the healthy food department...)
b) Bird poo in my hair,
c) Accidentally forgotten to put clothes on.
No, I am not just clinically insane, people stare at me.
Taxi drivers stop in the middle of the street and say:
"... Hey baby, how about a lift to my house?..." (Tempting, but no thanks!)
Women glare at me and mutter phrases such as:
"...Always stealing out best men..." under their breath.
Even old men wolf-whistle as I walk past!
Sadly it is not because I am a 6ft 2 leggy blonde beauty, it is merely because I'm white.
Being pale skinned here is synonymous with wealth, (couldn't be further from the poor-student-to-be truth), health (ha!) and an unhealthily liberal attitude to sex. (To my exhibitionist Mother's - don't even try and deny it Mum! - astonishment, I am one of the world's biggest prudes.)
Fear not though, my friends, I have developed a coping strategy. Now when I am harrassed, I politely say:
"I'm sorry, I had better be off, my husband and 5 children are awaiting my return...Oh, you flatter me! Do you really think I look too young to have 5 children?... I have the stretch-marks to prove it, would you like to see...?"
Thankfully I can always rely on male squeamishness to put paid to any fleeting attraction.
I think when I get home, I will have to hang around building sites in revealing clothes, just to give my shrinking ego a good boost.
On second thoughts... Maybe not.
Cuando empeze mi tiempo en Peru, siempre pense que:
a) tenia algo en mis dientes
b) mi pelo estaba loca
c) he olvidado poner mi ropa.
Recibe mucho atencion, pero no es a cause del hecho que soy guapissima... no. Es solo que tengo piel blanco. La gente aqui creen que todos los ingleses, irlandes, franceses.... tienen mucho dinero, buena salud y que son libres con sexo. Yo no soy asi.
Es divertido recibir tantos miradas, pero voy a disfrutar la atencion cuando yo lo tengo, en Inglaterra soy muy normal...
