Trespassing for the sake of a tenner...
Entry 33 of 90 | show all | print this entry |
Juju, Grandma and Grandad´s day :)
I am the daughter of a teacher and a police man, says it all really. I mean I have had to escape to the other side of the world to be able to even mildly misbehave. Today Lucy and Anna (2 sisters who have been in Cusco for 6 weeks as career-breakers) and I caught a taxi to Sacsayhuaman (My friend Rach pronounces this as ´Sexy mama´). We should have been suspicious when the taxi driver asked "Whereabouts should I drop you off?" We replied in a puzzled voice: "Um... the entrance? Always a good place to start...". Wrong. A very bad place to start. Entry to the site was charged at s/70... over a tenner! Sacsayhuaman is just above Cusco and is a sight of some historical interest, due to the Inca ruins which scatter the hillside. I stress the some very heavily. It really isn´t that interesting, and it looks for the main part like a stony golf-course. There was a lady on the entrance, and when we made it clear that we weren´t prepared to pay such an extortionate amount, (I´m in Peru... a tenner is extortionate...) she said we had to return to Cusco the way we had come. We ignored her, and set off walking along the road, confused by her bizarre demands. She got out her walkie-talkie, but we decided that being escorted home by the police would save us the taxi fare back, so we carried on walking. We soon discovered why she wanted us to return back the way we had come. About a mile up the road, there was a barbed wire fence which looked as though it had been hopped over a few too many times. It was sagging in the middle, and we looked at each other and thought ´Why not?´. We walked through a football match, a few fields, and found ourselves in... Sacsayhuaman... for free! We made the most of our afternoon, strolling and taking photos. I think I would have been majorly disappointed, had I paid s/70 for the experience, but I have to say, it was infinitely more enjoyable having sneaked in. Don´t worry Mum, and Dad - at least I only behave badly when you aren´t around to embarrass.... Lots of love to all xxxxxxx

How many ice creams would that have been? About 40? Bill thought it was very funny and said to keep it up, normally he is soooo law abiding but every now and then he likes to feel a little bit wicked even if only vicariously! Lots of love from a very chilly Norfolk
