Finally in 'Eastern Europe'!
Entry 19 of 89 | show all | print this entry |
I finally made it to Croatia after 3 nights on a boat from Greece. Greece really is far away from Central Europe. I actually had to take a boat back to Italy (Ancona) and then a boat to Croatia (Split). As I was walking around Ancona since I had about 6 hours before I had to board the next boat, I found myself completely confused as to where I was. I was back to hearing people speaking Italian and it really made my head spin. There was a beautiful beach down a street that I started wandering down, as I had no map of the city or any idea what was there.
On the boat to Croatia I met a girl from Seoul that was also travelling by herself. She spoke limited english, but she soon asked if she could travel around croatia with me because I was such an awesome person. Ok, maybe it was the fact she had no guidebook about Croatia and no idea where to go. We got to Splt, a main city on the coast of Croatia, and boarded another ferry to an island called Brac. The waters surrounding the island were so incredibly clear - definitely the clearest I've seen. Once we arrived at the town of Supetar, we boarded a bus to go to Bol, a town on the other side of the island. We were the only two backpackers on the bus, everyone else had no luggage, so I assume they were from somewhere else in Croatia. Well the bus ride was going fine until all the sudden there was a large sound, people screamed, and the bus began to fill with black smoke. The girl I was with grabbed my arm and hunched over. The bus stopped and everyone ran off. Everyone around us is speaking other languages and we see the bus driver breifly, and I mean briefly checking out the inside back of the bus. I go and look and it looks like the cover of something above the wheel inside blew off. Next thing I know the driver says to get back on (or at least motions to get back on board). I couldn't believe we were getting back on the bus! I made sure to sit in the front. The girl I was with said she immediately thought of the bus bombings in London. I thought nothing about that, only about our luggage under the bus that I would no longer have to carry around. I also didn't panic at all which makes me question my reflexes or if I'm still breathing:). This trip really has but me in quite a state of relaxation.
We arrive safely in Bol, which is famous for it's marble which was actually used to build the White House. I then leave my luggage with the girl (I think her name is Kyung Ha) and go venture for accommodation. I score a room with a shared bath in a house owned by this really old couple where the man tries to speak Italian to me ( I actually can manage a few words!! - thanks Marco and Christina!)
The Croatian islands are absolutely gorgeous and I highly recommend traveling here. English is widely understood and the prices are quite reasonable. Plus, you can say you went to Croatia!
I'm sticking around here a few more days then on to Slovenia. I'm am extremely excited about the rest of the trip in Europe because I feel like I'm finally getting somewhat off the backpacker path and it should start getting interesting with my great language skills!
Pictures will be coming. It's funny that when I take pictures I keep thinking how they are going to make great desktop pics. Guess I still have that geek in me.
My mom got her tickets to come to SE Asia with me for a month! I am so excited because I'm making her plan that entire part of the trip. No more 'SE Asia on a piece of gum', it will me Fodors and Frommers 'Actually eat at least one good meal, hopefully two a day'. So who's signing up to go to China with me in October? :) Don't get me wrong, I love traveling alone, and in fact I split ways with the girl for the day because I needed my alone time after a day of a travel companion!
