Day 14 – Friday, August 17

Started our day with another breakfast at the bakery, then got on the road to begin the drive through Montana. An uneventful day on the road to Medora, North Dakota where we arrived at Theodore Roosevelt National Park five minutes before the Visitor Center closed. We ran in and quickly picked up a park map and the Jr. Ranger program booklets for Elise and Zach. We checked out our Rough Rider hotel, which turned out to be NOT "rough" at all! We decided we had just enough time to drive through the park and still make it to the Medora Musical – advertised as "The Best Show in the West". On the drive we saw huge prairie dog colonies, many bison, deer, and wild horses! We did a short .1 mile hike up Buck Hill where we could see a heard of bison and the beautiful rock formations all around. After our drive, we grabbed a quick ice cream cone (2 minutes before the store closed!) and then drive to the show, arriving 3 minutes before it started. The show was very good, especially the second half. We liked the outdoor amphitheater set in a Medora Badlands valley/hillside. We enjoyed the singing, dancing, history, Teddy Roosevelt, live horses (especially the white horse that came down the mountains side in the spotlight!), the tap dancing “competition” between the people and the puppets, the special guest (comedian), the burst of fireworks, and the reenactment of an army scene. After the show we went back to the hotel and went to bed.
