Hello Barnaby Bear and Year One
We are now in Malaysia again. Julia's dad was very happy to see us and we have been really busy for the past few weeks. One of our best days out was to an elephant sanctuary. There were lots of elephants there and you could go and feed them. We fed a very large elephant lots of watermelon and carrots but it was only a snack for her. Julia, Chris and Rachel (Julia's sister) rode an elephant into the river. When the elephant came to a deep part she threw herself into the water taking them into the water with her. It was very funny.
We took a trip over to Langkwai, which is an island, and went on a very steep cable car ride. It was cool. We also went to a really nice waterfall. At the bottom of the waterfall the area was surrounded by monkeys and one cheeky monkey came over and tried to steal Shirley's coconut. We walked to the top of the falls and there were lots of little pools of water where you can slide on your bum from pool to pool. It was great fun.
Lastly we went to Kuching, which is in Sarawak, another part of Malaysia sometimes called Borneo. The city was really nice and Kuching means Cat in Malay so there were lots of cat statues everywhere. We went and stayed in the National Park for a few days. We were staying in wooden huts right on the edge of the jungle.
We went for quite a few walks in the jungle it was really good fun. The trees were massive and the bugs were huge and made lots of noise. We saw 3 types of monkey. A macaque which is really common (the one that stole Shirleys coconut). A silver back monkey with her baby. The babies are bright orange while the adults are silver/grey. We were very lucky to have seen her with her baby. The last type of monkey we saw was the rare Proboscis monkey, which was really cool. They have these huge noses and are now really rare. We also saw some snakes and a turtle at the waterfall. It was great.
On the tops of the hills there wasn't any jungle it was very dry and sandy. In this area there were a lot of pitcher plants. Each leaf forms a "pitcher," kind of a trumpet shape. It contains some sweet smelling liquid that lures the flies inside. When they fall in the lid closes shut and the plant gets it dinner. Yummy. Some of them are very pretty plants.
When we got back to Kuching we went to see an orangtan sanctuary. Most of the orangtans live in the protected jungle surrounding the sanctuary. At feeding time you walk into the jungle and watch the orangtans arrive for the free fruit. We were really lucky, not only did a lot of them turn up but we saw Richie. Richie is head male. He had massive cheeks and was huge. We took lots of photos for you all to see.
So on this trip we saw loads of animals. We were very lucky to have seen them.
Will write again soon.
