Entry 27 of 44 | show all | print this entry

After a night in Sibu we woke up early and headed straight to Miri. Miri is nice but Sibu wasn't really my cup of tea. From the onset it looked promising, we spoke to someone from Sibu and he was very nice, the city looked lively and surprisingly developed for such a small location, but the place we stayed was probably one of the worst so far. As we entered the room we immediately spotted three cockroaches, which I think counts as an infestation. There were no windows in this room so it was lacking any natural light (this made the morning very surreal). The weirdest part about it though, had to be the bathroom. It was very small, which is fine, a western toilet, which is good, and a sink. The odd thing was the shower, it hung slightly to the side of the toilet, so should you want a shower you complete soak the entire bathroom, and the water runs off the toilet and onto the floor. As you can imagine we declined the opportunity to "get clean" and woke up at seven and left. It wasn't very traumatic though, I slept fine which is all I'm really concerned with. We are in Miri now and our accommodation here is a lot better. It's homely and clean, the facilities are really good and it's as though you are staying in someone's flat. Very nice.

On the nature front there is some exciting news. I saw a hornbill.  Only very briefly, so I hope I will get another opportunity, but it was very exciting none the less. Another exciting discovery in the sky were two brilliantly black eagles. They where absolutely massive and we loved them. Various other small birds and tons of stray dogs, but other than that, fairly uneventful. I imagine the next few days will bring new and wonderful natural delights. We are going to Gulung Mulu National park. It is very remote so we have to fly there (a return ticket is only 45 pounds). We are staying in a lodge in the park for two nights. The lonely planet describes this national park as 'the single most impressive destination in all of Borneo' so we are very excited about this.

While we where traveling to Sibu we met a very friendly and helpful Malaysian. After a brief stop at a cafe he came back on the coach with a can of coke for each of us. He told us that we are all brothers and sisters, and drove us to our accommodation in Sibu (once we arrived). Our initial plan had been to get a ferry, and the tourist information desk in Kuching told us that there was one at 12:45. We got there only to find out from a helpful local that there wasn't another ferry and that we had been misinformed. The helpful local's name was Chong and he drove us to the bus terminal where we bussed instead of boated our way to Sibu.

We are very much enjoying our time in Malaysia. Everything is so easy because the prices are cheap and the locals are so helpful and kind. Borneo is a very lovely place.
