We drove down highway 94, a total of 120 km each way, to Milfred Sound for an amazing morning of sea kayaking.  Actually, Milfred Sound is not a sound at all; it is a fjord.  We've learned (yes, our brains are not turned completely off) that a sound is created by river erosion and has the characteristic of V-shaped valleys between the mountains on each side of the river.  A fjord is created by glacial erosion and has the characteristic of U-shaped valleys between the mountains on each side of the glacier.  There, now you know too.

In person, Milfred Sound more breathtaking than any pictures we've seen on postcards or descriptions we've heard from other travelers.  It was one of the most beautiful places we have ever been.  The planes and helicopters that constantly buzz overhead looked like little flies next to the gigantic mountains.  New Zealand fur seals (which actually are not seals, but sea lions) were sunning themselves on the rocky banks.  The sun was shining bright without a cloud in the sky.  We could not have ordered up a better day for paddling.

Enjoy the pics......

We want to be kayaking, too!!!!!
What glorious scenery! The water looks so clear and smooth and the mountains and glaciers so majestic. Too bad you had to have Ramen to go with it! We sure do wish we could have joined your kayaking adventure! At least you could give your feet another day of rest. RICK looks great after his flushing! Love, Mom and Dad K
