A: Grab some people off the street and team up to secure a palace!
And that's exactly what I did. One sunny day I came across Marcos and his Aussie girl Kari who were also having accomodation woes. Kari then got a job on the 90 meter yacht Christina O the next day so Marcos recruited another lonely traveller called Billy from Fremantle. Three unemployed deckhands in an expensive country trying to make the best of a bad situation and THE PALACE is born. Situated just a stones throw from Juan Les Pins beach it has cooking facilities, a tv and with Bill's little speakers, a hi fi system of which there is no equal.
Anyway we are all revved up in each others company so after a hearty home cooked meal of bangers and mash and several dozen Stella stubbies (the greatest thing about being here is budget beer) we hit the sack, and when Dawn arrives, fresh and rosy fingered we rise and tramp down to international yacht club d'Antibes and queue up with the dozens of other hopefuls looking for daywork. The only other time I have seen something like this is in the history books when the great depression forced men to roam the country looking and competing for menial labour work. It really bites.
One more week in the palace and Marcos and I will head to spain where it is more affordable living and we might escape the gangs of deckhand desperados that line the docks here every morning. I have one prospect for permanent crew work aboard a vintage 75 foot ketch but I won't jinx it by going into detail. Fingers Crossed.
