Long before Disneyland came into the picture in Hongkong, Ocean Park was alread a "must see" and I alotted a day here during my first and second Hongkong visits (with my wife Grace) in May 1989 and April 1997 (just two months before the British turned over Hongkong to China), e nterring the park via its 224-meter (745-foot) long, outdoor but weatherproof escalator, the second longest in the world, up a 30-degree slope, and exiting via cable car which connects both sides of the park (the two parts are separated by hills). Today, this 870,000 square meter, Indo-Pacific themed amusement park (opened on January 10, 1977) , covering the area of Wong Chuk Hang and Nam Long Shan at Deep Water Bay in the Southern District of Hongkong Island, is recognized as one of the 'Ten of the World's Most Popular Amusement Parks' on the June 2006 Forbes.com's list. My third visit, 30 years after its opening, was different as we were now travelling as a family, with my kids Jandy and Cheska as well as my in-laws.
This marine park's main draw is still its marine attractions at Marine Land. They include watching the thrilling theatrics of adorable Pacific bottlenose dolphins and Californian sea lions in a huge pond at the open-air Ocean Theater; plus displays of 70 sharks (from 35 species) at huge aquariums and the underwater viewing tunnel at the Shark Aquarium; 2,000 fish (in 250 species) plus some corals and cays at the huge, coral-themed aquariums at the expansive Atoll Reef; and over 1,000 sea jellies at the Sea Jelly Aquarium, Southeast Asia's first.
The park's other attractions are its numerous exciting rides including the heart-stopping , 2.5-minute, 77 kilometer per hour ride at the Dragon, a steel roller coaster ( the longest one in Hong Kong) with 842 meters of track, the swinging Crazy Galleon, the Eagle, the Ferris Wheel , Flying Swing and the thrilling Abyss Turbo Drop. We missed out on the Zamperla Mine Train (a roller coaster), the Space Wheel and the Raging River, all at Adventureland. More thumbnails ...
