Tuesday 10 August 2010, Innsbruck, Austria

Actually got up at a good time, had breaky and packed up the tent one final time. Before setting off Cassie gave a couple of our left over gas canisters to an old guy and a little boy on a neighbouring site, must have been the grandfather, probably from Spain by the thankyou he gave us.  Our account totalled €62 for the three nights once the tourist tax was added on.

Called Natwest to find out why my credit and debit cards were not working with TalkTalk Mobile and they reckoned nothing was wrong, so let's pray nothing happens there.  (It was Nationwide whose card I lost).

For the second time so far (the other was when moving within Slovenia) had to enter Italy to get to another part of Austria.  The part we were in was pretty much all confiscated from Austria after World War 1 as reparations for the damage they did; but the towns mostly all still speak German and have dual signage – the German name first and Italian second.   The good thing was they have the Austrian service quality with the Italian pricing for things such as coffees.

Anyway quite a nice drive the whole way really, that from Austria into Italy very good with views from different angles of the Dolomites.  After that was the Brenner Pass which we’d been told about before.  Not that many opportunities to stop along the better parts but you can stop just a few k’s from Innsbruck at the beginning of the Europabrücke (Europe’s Bridge) which is part of a recognised route from Modena in Italy all the way up to Munich, Germany.  Or so we hope given we have to be in Munich by 11am tomorrow at the latest!

Took a few nice photos of the bridge with the mountains of Innsbruck in the background, where we ended up soon enough.  Had a fair bit of fun finding the hotel’s car park, but got it the third time around the one-way loop.

Quite a good town, very retail-orientated though, can tell there’s a fair amount of cash in the air.  Also quite a few deadbeats wandering around, the kinds who’d rob you as soon as look at you.  If they sobered up.  Sent a fair bit of stuff home via the post, including the Tour de France souvenirs, my Geelong jumper, Aussie flag and my beanie & scarf.  No use for those now!  And in truth very minimal use for the last month.

Had a nice dinner in the Waldorf next to our hotel, actually a Chinese restaurant.  Very nice.  Afterwards retreated to the relative luxury of our €60 a night hotel room.  Learned some new Americanisms thanks to CNN’s Quest Means Business show; 'Drinking the Kool-Aid’ and ‘Communication Sandwich’.  A prize for whoever publically works either of those out first.  Also noticed Anna Cohen and Stan Grant have prominent roles on CNN, good on them!!  Whatever the hell happened to ‘Hi I’m’ Naomi Robson?!

Tried to withdraw some cash with Cassie’s Nationwide card, which they assured me would still work, but it said ‘limit exceeded’ (our first use of that account in days) so looks like we have to waste money calling bloody Nationwide again tomorrow.  Or we’ll have nae cash!

So last night in Europe-proper, quite sad.  Also exciting to be (soon enough) heading to Turkey for a few weeks and getting that little bit closer to home.  To Munich in the morning, have to get rid of a number of items including two tents, an esky, two sleeping mats, clothes basket full of useful items including food, hammer, spare tent pegs.  Have to kill an entire day in Munich, first point or order will be to find somewhere to stow our bags for the day.  Next is getting food of course then finding a Germany sew on patch to complete my collection.

Talk to you from either Munich or London soon.
