I got to Greymouth with Marina, we both thought it was a horrible town, thoroughly deserving the term Grey, which was the name of the river that leads through the town and into the sea, hence Greymouth.

The river also provides the water for the Montieths Brewery, which was an unexpected jem in this otherwise drab town. Commencing the tour at 11:30am was probably not the best way to do it, but surprisingly informative, and also having a comprehensive tasting session at the end. Having 7 different beers being brewed at anyone time meant you definately got your moneys worth in the tasting. The best was yet to come though, as the tour guide left the room saying we had 10 minutes behind the bar to drink as much as we want. Like I said 11:30am not the best time to do this tour, but what the hey. 10 minutes later and understandbly Marina was not in the mood to set off straight away. Deciding on a break of an hour to let the alcohol settle, we wandered around Greymouth, less and less inspiring. Then Marina met an old friend from Israel and it turned out they were having a traditional Jewish Friday night, which propted her to stay, and left me in limbo. The options being to stay and waste my time in Greymouth, although the idea of a traditional Jewish Friday sounded interesting, I did not want to saty any longer in this dullest of places, so I had one option left, and that was to hitch hike out of there.

So I did, a couple of rides and a few hours later I was in Punakaiki, ready to witness their pancake rocks and blowholes.
