I've decided that Australia's a strange place I still can't get my bearings, you get a different breed of backpackers here, compared to Asia, they are a lot younger, and more interested in getting pissed and partying, the nicest people I have met tend to be the ones doing the tours and actually trying to see and appreciate some of the country, my tour from Adelaide to Melbourne, including the Great Ocean Road we had one night stop overs in Robe, Port Fairy, and Apollo Bay, but it was actually a really dissapointing tour, in terms of what was planned to see and do.

The best things we saw were skipped by, we saw a pink lake (caused by a certaintypeof algae in the water, but the local aborigines believe it is pink because of the blood from a great battle many years ago) which was cool, but we saw it for nearly a minute, and we travelled the great Ocean road for about 5 hours but only stopped once, and that was a crappy beach. The tweleve apostles were also a real dissapointment, the only interesting thing abut them was that one crumbled into the sea about 6 months ago, which now means that there are 8 visible now instead of 9 there is only 12 if you can see under the water and even then theres supposed to be 13, weird. I'm not sure how they have become such a huge tourist attraction, before that we visited Lochard Gorge, which was very impressive and enjoyable by comparison, and had virtually no other tourists there, but we had to rush through it. The first 2 days there was not a lot to see, and the most fun was had playing on the swings, near a huge sink hole, that pretty much sums it up, we made our own entertainment as much as possible.

Our tour guide was a funny fellow, funny weird that is, he was very bad tempered and seemed to really resent having to transport us about, and would come out with some very strange comments about human life being worthless and is only a comodity these days, and if you die then so be it, not to reassuring to find that the guy driving you along these roads near the cliffs is a bit blase about human life. I don't know if he picked up on the dissatisfaction among the group because we were not asked to fill in an appraisal form, which most tours do. He wasn't helped by a faulty microphone and bad weather, but he was not what I would call a good guide, especially after some of the tours I have been on.

Fortunately i found salvation in 3 brits and a couple of Dutch guys, we had each other to be sarcastic and bitter with and generally have a laugh, which was good, because I had not a really good laugh for a long time, I think that is something I have missed since I got to Australia.

The funniest night was our last on the tour we were joined by a crazy Italian and Swiss girl from the other group who were travelling the same route as us. After cooking outrselves a beautiful mexican meal, we got very drunk and ended up dressed as pirates, monks and what ever else we could with all the left over sheets and pillow cases and jumping on each other to try and all fit on the sofa for the timer photographs, we ended up breaking the sofa and pretty much trashing the whole place but it was silly fun, and it was what I needed.

I would not reccomend doing this route as a tour, the company I went with was Wayward Tours, which had a very good reputation, but they all do the same thing. If you are in the area I think you would be better off hiring a car, or doing a tour solely of the Great Ocean Road, for the money it costs there is just not enough of interest from Adelaide to Melbourne to justify the outlay.
