Ecuador it turns out has lots of names of cities and towns that are really tough to remember.  It took me weeks to remember that I had been to Cotacachi and had visited the Quicocha Lagoon, but just the names.  The experience was a nice one that I'll certainly remember.

The bus rides down here were long but beautiful.  Southern Colombia
and northern Ecuador have similar Andean landscapes with farmland
everywhere.  As gasoline is
produced in Ecuador, gas prices are about $1 USD per gallon.  Ecuador
deals in USD & gallons.  Buses run about $1/hour.

Arriving at a clean, big room in a nice hostal with nice kitchen was a welcome change for Yuli and me after staying in a not so nice place that had a funny odor in Ipiales.  Cotacachi is known for it's leatherwork, so we took some time here to admire some finely designed objects & clothing of all shapes & sizes.  Looking around at this inexpensive leather made me think about the possibility of importing some to other locations.  I bought a pretty nice leather belt for $4.

The next day Yuli & I walked around the Quicocha Lagoon just outside of town.  A good 5 hour walk and a 5 minute ride in the back of a speeding pick up truck in the rain got us around the loop.  Weather changed from cold to hot, windy to calm, sunny to rainy, and from foggy to clear over the course of the hike.  It was a great day with some adventure (losing the trail and bushwacking a bit).  The lagoon is the inside of a dormant volcano, and has 2 large islands inside of it.  I was interested by the change in flora seen between here and everything north I had seen so far.

Have a look at some more pretty pictures of Cotacachi and plantlife.
