We had to walk around looking for another hostel the next day – ours was all booked, so after doing that we decided to go ultra-touristy and go on a boat ride
! Apparently the boat driver was speaking English, but we couldn’t understand a word he was saying, so we just sat back, enjoyed the view and took heaps of photos because we are tourists and that’s what tourists do. After that we walked around a bit more and got lunch at a cheap Italian restaurant. We were cold and freezing and cold and sick of sightseeing, so we went back to the hostel for an afternoon nap – we really miss siestas! Our evening was pretty quiet too – Bruges isn’t exactly a party capital.
Day trip to Brussels! We caught the train to Brussels, and after about 1 hour we had walked around the touristy bit, seen the main square and the statue of the little boy wizzing – ‘Mannekin Piss’ I think his name is (everyone told me the statue was going to be smaller than I thought, so I thought it was going to be small.. but not that small?!) So Megg and I were wondering what the hell we were going to do for the rest of the day (we aren’t exactly 100% motivated to look at stuff anymore..) when Megg whacked me and yells ‘JAC!’. Yep, a familiar face – Megg bumped into her old housemate Jac, and her sister Bec! We spent the rest of the day with them, wandering around, saw the wizzing girl, ate choc strawberries (sooooo yum), had hot chocolates, visited HEAPS of chocolate shops, and then went back to their hotel room for a bit before heading out for dinner
. Apparently they are famous for their mussels, so Jac, Bec and I shared a big bucket of them and then had some pasta. Turns out I had a BAAAD mussel, or my stomach just really doesn’t like them, because I got a really really bad stomach ache from them – knives stabbing me type pain. So that kinda killed the night unfortunately, I wasn’t sure if I was going to start feeling sick or what, so Megg and I headed back to Bruges (don’t worry I was fine though!). Note to self DON’T EAT BRUSSELS MUSSELS.
Jac and Bec came to Bruges for the day, so we met them for breakfast (I had a pancake!) before we headed off to our final backpacking destination - Paris!
Megg and I arrived in icy Bruges in the arvo, and after finding our hostel went for a walk to see the sites. It's kind of like Cesky Krumlov in that it’s pretty small and there isn’t actually much to do apart from admire the ancient buildings and canals. We saw the 'Belfry Tower’ in the main Markt square, but it was a rip-off to walk up the 300 and something stairs (I’m not paying €8 unless there is a lift!), so we just looked at it. There are about a million chocolate shops, so we spent the rest of the day going in and out of them with watering mouths – so much yummy chocolate EVERYWHERE! I did a free walking tour in the eve with all the clothes I own on – Megg was too cold and couldn’t go outside! I’m sure I learnt lots of interesting things.. All I can remember is that Beer was invented in the middle ages because water was too dirty to drink. But I learnt that in Prague – the 1st original beer was invented there, it tasted like crap.
