I dropped Megg off to visit our hansom statue friend 'David’ (we call him Dave) as I had already seen him last time I was in Florence, and I went on Skype to check in with the fams and ‘The Macca’ (or Ben). Megg was still in line to see Dave when I had finished (she had to line up for a bit over 2 hrs!!) so I went for a walk around Florence, got tickets for the Uffizi Museum the next day, and did a bit of window shopping. Megg wasn’t feeling too good after seeing Dave, so we had a rest back at the hostel for a few hours. We spent the evening walking around the markets and streets, and went to a touristy restaurant near the Duomo for dinner and had another wander before hitting the sack.
We got tickets for the 11.30 session at the Uffizi, so we started day 2 of sightseeing there. I love the Botticelli paintings, particularly ‘The Birth of Venus’... it’s nice to look at for ages. When we had finished there we shared a calzone for lunch and wandered over the Ponte Vecchio, up all the millions of steps to the Piazza Michelangelo where we relaxed and enjoyed the view of Florence. There was a couple who had just gotten married having their photos taken up there and they got really into it – some very random poses that were not always flattering... We mixed it up a bit and had pizza for dinner in the main piazza near the Uffizi (can’t remember it’s name right now sorry) where to old Italian dudes asked us if we wanted to go to the Patty Smith concert that was on in the town hall just off the Piazza. We didn’t know who Patty Smith was.. some famous singer from the 70’s apparently, but we weren’t doing anything and it was a bit open public place – no risk of being kidnapped etc – so we went! It was actually pretty good, she’s a great singer, and it was in an amazing room which was covered in Michelangelo paintings etc
We were only half lying – we didn’t have a flight, but we were leaving Florence the next day to visit Jules, Zoe and Joe in Siena! We checked out but had to take our bags to another little hotel (which was up a million stairs) if we didn’t want to lug them around all day before meeting Jules and Zoe, who were picking us up on their way back from Milan. After dropping the packs off we headed to the Palace gardens (start with a B.. can’t remember the name!) and spend quite a few hours wandering them, enjoying various views. We grabbed some pizza for lunch (SURPRISE!) and topped it off with gelato, mmmmm… Then picked up our bags and headed to the station to meet Jules and Zoe. It was so good to see some familiar faces!! Zoe hadn’t been to the Florence markets before so we headed to there for a bit of a wander – I got some ‘authentic’ Ray Bans and Zoe scored a really nice leather handbag, before jumping in the car and zooming off to Siena!
