Milford Sounds

Milford Sound runs 15 kilometres inland from the Tasman Sea and is surrounded by sheer rock faces that rise 1200 metres or more on either side. Among the peaks are The Elephant at 1517 m, said to resemble an elephant's head and Lion Mountain, 1302 m, in the shape of a crouching lion. Lush rain forests cling precariously to these cliffs, while seals, penguins, and dolphins frequent the waters.
Whatever the weather, it is a spectacular sight. When it rains, waterfalls cascade of the mountain tops, when it is sunny, you can view all of the mountain peaks and when it snows, avalanches often tumble down the mountain slopes. We went to Milford Sounds on a day trip from Queenstown. We nearly never made it though as the bus forgot to pick us up and we had to chase it in a taxi! Really glad we did as it was a spectacular sight to see.
