Srrangapatnam is a fort town that was used as a headquarters by the leader Tipu Sultan, and is now a fort town featuring the spot where he was killed. Apparently, it 'makes a fascinating day trip from Mysore' (my footprint guidebook!) so thats exactly what i decided to do.
First place didn't start out too well, as they have slapped a 100Rs entrance fee for foreigners on the summer palace in a typically Indian money grabbing way. Footprint described it as 'splendid', but after the unmissable light show in Hyderabad i decided i wouldn't trust them this time and was satisfied with the view from outside. The Gumbaz (i was also amused by the name) was my next site, the tipu families' mausoleum, built in memory of his father, and is a very attractive and peaceful spot, probably my site of the day, and although i haven't been to Agra, i can definately feel the Taj resemblance. Had an insane encounter with the guy running the toilet complex there as he was unbelievably enthusiastic in unnecessarily helping me to do things, like carry ,y bag, wash my feet etc The summer palace

. If they used toilet paper here in India I'm sure he'd have insisted he wiped for me! Contrary to this, the security guard there was rather intrusive and i found I'm curiously fumbling through my belongings in my bag when i left the toilets.
The rest of the main sites were on the other side of town, so after checking out the supposed sites near here (nothing worth boring you with) i went back via the bus station. Took lunch and tried these things called raggi, which is apparently made from raggi (a grain) flour and water, and is mixed up in a sticky consistency, so its like a brown gooey ball, which you break pieces off of, and eat with green sambal, not chewing it as it sticks to your mouth. A lot tastier than it sounds, its dark brown by the way, so could be mistaken for a ball of crap too!
I was pretty tired by this point (the sites are pretty spread out, and i walked between them all, well over 7km by now), however i checked out colonels tomb, the dungeons, the spot where Tipu was found and the nearby gardens, before realising the pain i was experiencing in my hands, lips, toes was due to the fact i had been rather badly sun-burnt. What ridiculous places to get sunburn eh!
