Nong Khiaw was a very nice riverside town, on the Nam Ou river by the way, however i couldn't rouse enough people to get the boat to Luang Prabang so i decided to go to Mung Ngoi to see if i would have more luck there, which i didn't. However the boat ride through the mountains was very beautiful and convinced me that i didn't really need to do the whole 7 hour stretch, as i find with this sort of thing that is amazing scenery, but you do start to lose interest after a while, and i decided that i didn't need 7 hours of it, 1 was enough.
Mung Ngoi is a fantastic place to relax. Its a one street village with nothing really but guesthouses with riverview bungalows lining the street. Many hours over the last few days have been spent relaxing in a hammock on the balcony of my wooden riverside bungalow, watching the locals fishing. Also there's basically no electricity there, hence the lack of contact(MUM!).
An aside:- i find it very strange here in Lao, that your biggest expense seems to be for food, for example, if i am to eat in a restaurant and have one beer, that will cost me more than my room for the night, usually by quite a way too
Walking past one of the guesthouses i was invited inside by a gorgeous 19 year old who lived there, as it turned out that her sister had recently had a baby and this was the day of the party to celebrate. It had been 15 days since the baby was born, apparently that is significant int his country for some reason, and so at 9 am the party started. The whole day had been spent by Laos people drinking Lao Lao (rice wine), beer lao, eating and general merriment! In the evening i got to sample some traditional lao food, which included ducks blood amongst other things.
So now im in Luang Prabang, and after a long break from temples, i feel that i am more than ready to go see some more, so i'll update anyone who's actually reading this with photos and info soon. Bye
