Melbourne and the unlucky streak continues!
Entry 6 of 21 | show all | print this entry |
My last couple of days in Bali were pretty uneventfull as it chucked it down on Friday so I was pretty much confined to my room watching bad movies on the TV. I did get out and do some shopping though and managed to buy loads of stuff I don't need as the sellers were so pushy.
Saturday was gorgeous though so it was more sunbathing before packing my stuff and checking out to go to Oz.
Met a lovely girl called Alex on the plane who I was chatting to for ages before she told me she was only 17 and starting uni this week. I felt sooo old! I think she was glad to have someone to talk to on the plane though as she was scared of flying and her parents were staying on in Bali so she was travelling on her own.
I arrived in Melbourne at about 8am and made my way to my hostel. I knew I would like Melbourne straight away as it was so easy to get to the city from the airport and they had free buses to all of the hotels and hostels from the train station. It was also really sunny which is contrary to what every one told me about Melbourne as people said it would be fairly overcast.
When I got to the hostel I checked in and the girl said that I just needed to pick any of the beds that had no sheets on in the room and someone would come to make the bed up later that morning. When I got to the room, there were 2 beds free, one of which was the only double bed in the room on the bottom bunk which was right next to the fan - massive bonus!!
After a quick power nap, I decided to go up Rialto towers to their 360 degree observation deck which is 55 floors above the city to check out whe whole city before I started exploring properly. It was really cool up there and I took loads of photo's. The view was amazing as on 1 side there is the coastline and the docks and on the other, loads of high rise buildings either side of the river Yarra.
After that I went for a wander along the river where there are loads of street performers and artists. It was really cool. Went back to the hostel after that to meet up with 2 girls I'd met earlier who were from Leeds (Becky and Clare) as we'd agreed to go out that night to the ice bar here which is a bar where everything is made out of ice and you get given big coats as you go in. It sounded soo cool, but unfortunately, they were too hungover from the night before to do anything.
It was actually quite good though as it meant that I could go back up Rialto towers to see the view at night which was just as spectacular. I managed to catch the crown casino fire show from up there too which was really cool. Headed back to the hostel after that and hung out with some dutch girls in the bar before catching the end of top gun in the in hostel cinema. I think this has to be the best hostel ever as you also get free meal in the evening!!
Day 2, I did quite a bit of the touristy stuff and went to Melbourne Gaol which was really quite interesting even though it is a museum!! They have a tour where you get booked and locked in a cell like a real prisoner would which was a bit wierd but good.
I then went for a wander in some of the parks and gardens here where unfortunatley, I managed to leave my camera on one of the park benches. I can't believe I did it but by the time I realised about 10 minutes later, it was no where to be seen. i went to the police station and got a lost property report and also phoned the park wardens but nothing has been handed in so far and it's been 24 hours - rubbish. I am glad I loaded some of my photo's on to facebook and the blog but I have lost loads that I didn't load including all my ones of Melbourne!! I went out and bought a new camera this morning so I think I's going to go back up Rialto towers later today as those are the photo's I wanted the most.
After i registered my lost camera, I went to the immigration museum which was booooooring but luckily I went in the last 1/2 hour so got in for free, I was so glad I didn't pay as I was in and out in 20 mins.
Got back to the hostel at about 6 and Becky and Clare had discovered an unofficial Neighbours night at a bar here so we decided to go to that, another girl called Amy from our room came along too. The drinks were well cheap and they had special shots named after the neighbours cast so I was a little bit drunk. There were meant to be 3 neighbours cast there, Steph (who I recognised), Carmella (who I didn't) and Toady, who was meant to be there but was a no show which I was gutted about as have heard he is banned from the proper Neighbours night in St Kilda for being too drunk (as is Harold too apparently which is a shock as he is such a God loving man).
Had a really great night as there was a quiz on and we managed to recruit 3 other people to our team so didn't do too badly. I won some tacky ozzie prizes including a hat with corks on in a game of 2 up!! and also won a phone card by naming that tune as dead or alive - you spin me round - I think I had an advantage being old enough to actually remember the song when it was out!!.
However, when we left, my bad luck came back with a vengance and I tripped over in the street and chipped my front tooth on the pavement. There was blood everywhere and I was really upset as there was a big chunk missing from the tooth - I cried loads and kept saying how I looked like I lived in a trailer and how I would never look the same again. Luckily, I remembered seeing a dentist during the day so as soon as I got up this morining I went over and got it fixed. It cost me $250 (about 125 pounds) but was well worth it so that I don't look like I am trailer trash anymore.
I can't believe I have only been away for 2 weeks and have lost my camera and my phone, got the worst bed bug bites ever and chipped my front tooth. It better not carry on like this or I will be too poor and disheartened to stay for the whole trip. I have spent 300 pounds today on my tooth and camera!! Hopefully, i can claim them both back on insurance though.
So far I am loving Australia despite all the bad luck. I spoke to Lyndsey yesterday and have arranged to meet her after work on Friday in Sydney. Am very excited about seeing her and Geth and spending some quality time with them. Becky and Clare left for Sydney today so I have arranged to meet up with them during the week next week to do the bridge climb and Sydney Zoo which is cool as it means I will have freind when Lynds and Geth are at work.
My plans for the rest of the day are to go on a river cruise and then go back up Rialto towers and try and take tons of photo's with my new camera which is currently charging in the room.
Hope you are all well. Keep on emailing me as it is really great to log on and read all your news. Love Jo xxx

I can't believe your run of bad luck Jo. Hope the tooth is fixed okay.
Glad you've got a new camera so we can see loads more photos.
Are you going on the Neighbours tour down Ramsay Street? Carmella is fairly new, she used to be a Nun but now she's having Oliver's baby but she's not with Oliver any more. She runs her own fruit and veg business.
