On approach to 'San Fran’ we passed the dockyard where we got our first glimpse of Alcatraz, the drivers also pointed out that George Lucas is from San Fran and as we crossed the Bay Bridge showed us the huge cranes that had provided some of the inspiration for the enemy machines used in the Star Wars films.
Our penultimate stop with the bus was on the opposite side of the bay with great views of San Fran and Alcatraz, here we were to say goodbye to the 16 guys who were leaving us here, also to the two drivers who would not be on our future trips
. We took photos, exchanged some e-mail and blog details and arranged our bags so we could easily drag them off when we arrived at the Bus terminal. On arrival at the terminal we were two of only six people to get off here as all the others were staying at the Green Tortoise hostel. Knowing we would need our own space, we had booked into USA Hostels on Post Street near to Union Square in downtown San Fran. Getting a taxi at the bus terminal was not easy and we had to drag all our things at least a block before Annabelle managed to flag one down. On arrival at the hostel we chatted to a really nice lady who gave us some great information about local bus tours which we booked ourselves onto for the Monday. We headed up to our room to find ourselves in our own separate room with a double bed, we had totally forgotten that we had booked some of our own space! Finally we had our own space, Annabelle flopped on the bed in a daze! We had our own fridge, phone, I-Radio and charger, plenty of electrical sockets etc etc.. We plonked the bags down and took a look outside to find 3 black marble sinks and 4 shower units with their own locks on! Fantastic! We then took a look downstairs to find a huge industrial kitchen with all the implements you would need to cook a great meal! There was a pool table and bar, 8 computers with internet, payphones and unbelievably a cinema, yes a cinema folks! This place was our favourite hostel so far!! The final surprise was when we went back to the room and found a couple of doors that we thought were connecting doors for fire escape, we actually found a large wardrobe and our very own en-suite bathroom! Wow... we could finally wee when we wanted to – thank god!
We decided to chill out in the hostel during the evening and had only popped out to get a grip of the local area when we stumbled upon a burger bar, Chris could not resist, again! We headed in and ordered two special burgers (Annabelle had a Buffalo burger) with side orders of garlic fries, coleslaw and spries (Sweet Potato Fries) amazing..
We headed back to our room to get some well deserved rest and finally a good sleep!!
We woke to find ourselves cold, for a change! Amazingly we had slept through the night which was mostly due to the sleeping tablets we took the night before. We pulled up at a Denny's Diner around 9.30am for our final slice of Americana prior to reaching San Francisco. We all piled in and ordered a Denny’s breakfast which was at best pretty average! The coffee helped us greatly in trying to get ready for the day ahead and we boarded the bus for the final couple of hours into San Francisco.
